Stihi

The stihi is a demonic creature of Albanian tradition, recorded most fully in the demonology of the Italo-Albanian communities — the Arberesh of southern Italy, whose ancestors carried the old beliefs across the Adriatic centuries ago and kept them. She is a female dragon, she breathes fire, and she has one recorded occupation: the greedy guarding of her treasure trove. The name itself descends from the Greek word for an elemental spirit, which suits a being whose whole nature is fire wrapped around gold.

She makes a pointed pair with her Albanian sister-dragon the kulshedra. The kulshedra is a public calamity — drought, the year's hinge, a victim owed — while the stihi is a private one: her menace exists only in relation to what she owns, and the tradition does not record her raiding, blighting, or demanding anything. She is the hoard-dragon in its purest form, the guardian whose fire is a property line.
