Isiququmadevu

Isiququmadevu belongs to the swallowing-monster tales of southern African tradition, and specifically to Zulu narrative as recorded in the nineteenth century. The creature is described as bloated and squat, bearded in some renderings, and its characteristic act is total consumption: it swallows people, cattle, dogs and whole settlements, and the accounts pile the categories up to convey scale. Everything taken remains alive inside it.

The resolution is what distinguishes these tales from ordinary monster stories. A survivor — often a person the creature failed to swallow, or someone born or hidden apart — cuts the beast open, and the swallowed emerge living, along with their animals and possessions, in an order the tellings enjoy recounting. Reference literature has sometimes filed the name alongside unrelated cryptozoological reports of large unknown animals, which is a category error: the being belongs to a narrative tradition with a clear structure and a clear function, not to a record of sightings.
