Ahura Mazda

Ahura Mazda — the name means something close to wise lord — is the supreme god of Zoroastrian tradition, the maker of the good creation and the source of light, truth, and order. The oldest hymns address him directly and present him as approached through thought and choice rather than through appeasement, which distinguishes the tradition sharply from its neighbours. He is attended by a set of beneficent immortals who are at once his creations, his aspects, and the qualities the worshipper is asked to cultivate.

The cosmology sets him against Angra Mainyu, the destructive spirit, and this pairing organises everything. Where the later systematic texts are concerned, creation proceeds in a sequence, is assaulted, and passes through a long appointed period of mixture before being restored; Ahura Mazda's foreknowledge of the outcome is part of what makes the period bearable in the tradition's own terms. Accounts differ, sometimes sharply, on whether the two spirits are coeval or whether the hostile one is subordinate and later, and this has been argued over for a very long time.

He is also unusual in what he does not do. The texts give him no consort in the older strata, no genealogy of the sort the surrounding traditions supply, and comparatively little narrative action; his creating is described rather than told, and his victory is assured rather than fought for in the manner of a combat myth. In the Persian literary tradition his name persists long after in contexts far removed from the theology, often simply as the name of God.
